Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these medications must be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of appetite.

"I experienced something flipping and you become ravenous," said an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural management.
