Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several approach shafts down to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," he added. "They were part of numerous British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
